Bills changing South Dakota election laws saw considerable debate this legislative session.

The House and Senate State Affairs Committee each heard bills on changing provisions for absentee voting, specifically.

In the House, representatives heard House Bill 1217. It called for modifications to guard against future election fraud. One of its provisions would cut the number of days available to vote absentee. This bill ultimately failed.

Meanwhile, the Senate State Affairs Committee heard House Bill 1165. It offered more modest refinements, including tighter control of ballot drop boxes. The bill went on to pass in both chambers.

In their own words, listen to the debates on both bills.
