After deliberation and multiple meetings between the House and Senate, Senate Bill 40 is dead.
That means statewide candidates will continue to be nominated by state convention.
The bill initially sought to change it so each political party’s candidates for statewide office are selected by popular vote. It was amended down to only allow candidates for governor choose their running mates.
Sen. David Johnson moved to vote against the version of the bill approved by the House. He said the two chambers were unable to come up with a compromise.
The Senate voted 29 to 4 in favor of killing the bill.
