DSS Secretary to retire; 3rd departure from Noem's cabinet in past month

Gov. Kristi Noem will have yet another cabinet position to fill as she prepares to begin her second term.

Department of Social Services Secretary Laurie Gill is retiring from state government, according to a statement. Her last day is Jan. 8.

Gill is the third member of Noem's cabinet to depart in the past month. Just days ago, Secretary of Health Joan Adam resigned after less than a year on the job.

Adam’s retirement came amid criticism from conservatives over a Department of Health contract with a transgender advocacy group. Noem’s office would not comment on whether Adam’s departure was connected to that now-canceled contract.

The Secretary of Education’s office will also soon be vacant. Current secretary Tiffany Sanderson is leaving to become president of Lake Area Technical College in Watertown on Jan. 1.
