A candidate for South Dakota legislature charged with exposing a minor to sexual grooming behavior has lost his bid for office.

Joel Koskan is a Republican from Wood. Court documents filed last week allege Koskan began abusing the victim in 2014 when the child was 12 years old.

Koskan was seeking to represent District 26 in the state Senate. He was defeated by Democrat Shawn Bordeaux.

Bordeaux received 3,479 votes (58%) to Koskan's 2,495 votes (42%), according to the Secretary of State's Office.
