Republican Marty Jackley is the de facto winner of the race for attorney general in November.

That’s because the state Democratic and Libertarian parties failed to field candidates to challenge Jackley for the position. The Democratic Party's state convention was last weekend.

Jackley said he’s honored to serve as the Republican nominee and attorney general-elect for South Dakota.

“I recognize that Republican, Democrat and independent elected state's attorneys and sheriffs have all been an important part of our team, and I am committed to serving alongside all of them to protect communities, ensure justice, and support crime victims,” Jackley said in an email.

Jackley was previously attorney general before term limits forced him to step down. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018 and has since been a partner with the Gunderson Palmer law firm.

Jackley was succeeded as attorney general by Jason Ravnsborg, who was recently removed from office for his involvement in a fatal car crash that took the life of a pedestrian.

Jackley said he continues to support term limits.

“Because of term limits my past experience serving as attorney general is now strengthened with four years of new perspective gained from the private sector and further hands-on experience as a small town state’s attorney for Jones and Haakon Counties,” Jackley said.
