Vermillion joins the protest of anti-abortion laws

About a hundred Vermillion residents and students at the University of South Dakota gathered at the Clay County Courthouse for a march in protest of the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

Women, children, and families gathered, carrying signs and chanting while marching through downtown Vermillion.

Protest organizer Anna Bottesini said she felt pushed by others to organize after seeing demonstrations on social media in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Sioux City.

"We want to make it clear that what the Supreme Court has decided is not what the majority of people want," Bottesini said.

A protest was held prior to the Supreme Court decision when a draft opinion to overturn the law was leaked, gathering around 40 people.

"This is an insane amount compared to then," said Bottesini, who hopes that today's turnout can maintain during the school year.

Students for Reproductive Rights (SFRR), a student group at the University of South Dakota, encouraged people to donate to abortion funds that help women get abortions or emergency contraception.

The recent Supreme Court ruling activated a trigger law making abortion illegal in South Dakota unless performed to save the life of the mother.
