US Senator John Thune says the Senate will fill a US Supreme Court vacancy, even during the lame-duck session following the presidential election in November.
CNN reports those comments after the second-ranking Republican leader was asked about the hypothetical scenario. Last week, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsberg announced her cancer has returned.
In 2016, following the death of late Justice Antonin Scalia, Thune supported Senate President Mitch McConnell, who said the next president should make the lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.
That’s because at the time the Senate and White House were occupied by different parties.
Since the Senate and White House are occupied by Republicans, they say, that standard doesn’t apply.
