The head of the Black Hills National Forest says the agency is saddened and concerned to hear about layoffs at a sawmill in the northern Black Hills. Last week, Neiman Enterprises announced it was laying off 50 employees—a quarter of its staff.

The Black Hills Clean Water Alliance is taking issue with a response to public objections by the Forest Service. The anti-mining group accuses the federal agency of rushing a northern hills gold drilling exploration project forward.

South Dakota ranchers are pushing federal lawmakers to provide more support for their industry in the upcoming farm bill. Ranchers argue federal support laid out in the 2018 federal farm bill is inadequate, especially compared to the amount given to crop producers.

An indigenous-led organization purchased 40 acres near Bear Butte in the hopes of teaching the next generation about traditional values and land stewardship. The group's leaders say it's also a chance to reclaim a piece of what was stolen after colonization.

And more.
