Earlier this year, the State of South Dakota settled a lawsuit with an LGBTQ+ advocacy group and issued a formal apology after pulling the group’s funding. Now the group is putting that money to work.

Gov. Kristi Noem and Attorney General Marty Jackley are offering to help train law enforcement officers for South Dakota’s nine Native American tribes. The only existing tribal law enforcement training program is in New Mexico.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza – or bird flu – has been found in South Dakota cattle. While there are no human cases, the matter has the attention of state livestock owners and veterinarians.

As part of the Sturgis municipal election, residents voted to eliminate the city manager position from local government. This comes after a group successfully petitioned to get the issue on the ballot, arguing the position took away authority from elected officials.

The Black Hills’ largest sawmill is announcing layoffs and reductions at its Spearfish facility. Nieman Enterprises says it’s laying off 50 employees—roughly a quarter of its staff at Spearfish Forest Products.

Two large employers in the northern hills are co-hosting a job fair on Tuesday. Both Fermilab and the Sanford Underground Research Facility want to hire skilled trade, technical and administrative roles to assist with upcoming neutrino research.
