A traveling exhibit comes home to South Dakota. "Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe" puts a spotlight on the work and legacy of Oscar Howe.

We revisit conversations with representatives of the South Dakota Art Museum from the exhibit's opening day. It's open now through Sept. 17.

Donna Merkt is the director of the South Dakota Art Museum. Abigail Ramsbottom is its education curator and coordinator. They discuss the artist's impact and how the museum is creating an educational, cultural and community experience around the exhibit.

We'll also hear from Oscar Howe in his own words.

Plus, we resurface an interview with contemporary artist Keith BraveHeart. BraveHeart works with young artists at the annual Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute at the University of South Dakota.

He and Lori Walsh explore the groundwork Howe laid for BraveHeart and other young artists through his work and his words.

Research data obtained through the archives of the South Dakota Oral History Center, on behalf of the Department of Native Studies at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, South Dakota. Archival audio heard in this broadcast is from the Oscar Howe materials collection. The call number is AIRP 1256, and the audio was recorded in 1963.
