History 605 From the Archives: "Oceans of Grain" with guest Scott Nelson

With Odessa and Ukraine still in the news, it is worth going back to this episode from July of 2022 to hear Scott Nelson's explanation of how the United States' grain production, telegraph system, and shipping dominance remade the world markets in the late 19th century. Nelson argues that since the Ancient Greeks, when grain prices suddenly change it quickly fosters revolution and global instability. And, you may think the "Panic of 1873," a global banking crisis and recession, doesn't impact life in South Dakota today, but after listening to this, you might reconsider that view.
