History 605 Season 3; Ep 11. From Deadwood to Hollywood. South Dakota on screen with Jon Schaff.

How have movies and TV shows represented South Dakota? The answer comes down on an abiding interest in American Indian culture or South Dakota's scenery. Those are the factors that have attracted filmmakers for westerns, science fiction, or about roaming spirits in general. Whether it's "Dances With Wolves," "Deadwood" and Al Swearengen or Chloe Zhoa's recent films, those themes started early in filmmaking with Oscar Micheaux and continue to today. Jon Schaff joins us to discuss his recent essay in, "Old Trails and New Roads in South Dakota History" edited by Jon Lauck.
