What region of the country reflects the best of America? Jon Lauck argues in his new book, The Good Country: A History of the American Midwest, that the 19th century Midwest does. How did that happen? It was the intentional and thoughtful work by the authors of the Northwest Ordinance – the founding statute enabling new territories to enter the Union – as well as the thousands of people who settled there and created a new culture that was distinct. While it was not a perfect country, according to Lauck’s book, it was The Good Country.
