Writer Joseph Starita joins us to talk about his book "I am a Man" where he shares the remarkable story of how Standing Bear defeated General George Crook in 1879, not on the battlefield, but in federal court.

Desiring only to bury his son in his tribal burial grounds, Standing Bear's deeply held beliefs and his remarkable actions inspire the sympathies of influential supporters who back his case.

We also discuss the Jeffersonian ideal of the Declaration of Independence and how that ideal differed from President Jefferson's designs on western lands. A difference that Standing Bear travels down in his use of Jefferson's ideals to defeat the US Government's injustice.
