History 605: S2, Ep7, ' Live Interview with Francis Whitebird'

SDPB

Who were the Lakota Code Talkers?

What kind of language is Lakota?

What can go wrong when two very conceptually different languages such as English and Lakota try to communicate in treaties?

In this LIVE episode of History 605, my guest discusses all those things. Francis Whitebird has long been a supporter of the South Dakota Historical Society, having served nine years as a Trustee. He was also Governor Mickelson’s Commissioner of Indian Affairs and supported his reconciliation efforts. Francis is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and has an interesting perspective on what it means to be Lakota because of his boyhood education in the Lakota language.
