Interesting new music

Sturgis native David Hersrud brings his years in the music industry and lifelong interest in discovering new music to this episode of Fresh Tracks. There are some ”Interesting” new albums out for summertime listening.

Recorded in 2011 at Helm’s Woodstock studio before he died in 2012:

Kendrick Lamar: “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”
His 5th album and first in 5 years, first and only rapper to win a Pulitzer Prize:

Joy Oladukun: “Purple Haze”
American singer-songwriter whose music includes elements of folk, rock, rhythm and blues and pop, already done an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, first generation child of Nigerian immigrants

Bret McKensie: “A Little Time”
New Zealand comedian, actor, musician and producer and 1/2 of musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, -song is from upcoming album Songs Without Jokes, got Academy Award for best original song in 2011, “Man Or Muppet”

Larkin Poe: “Bad Spell”
Started out as a trio with older sister Jessica as the Lovell Sisters, a bluegrass/americana group, when Jessica left the sisters took the name of their great-great-great-great grandfather, song is from their new album Blood Harmony which comes out in November

Kali Uchis: “Desafinado”
from soundtrack to “Minions, The Rise of Gru”, 60s and 70s hits recorded by contemporary artists; the movie is due first week of July

Larry, although retired as Assistant General Manager for SDPB, continues to write, host, and do media production and voice work for SDPB.
