The South Dakota Department of Transportation’s snowplow naming contest has returned.

Every November, the DOT asks South Dakotans to come up with clever names for the state’s snowplow fleet. Names can be submitted by groups, like classrooms, businesses or retirement communities, or by individuals.

Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt said the contest serves a fun, yet purposeful way for the department to interact with the public and encourage the use of winter weather resources like 511.

“Let’s all be diligent in promoting the many resources SDDOT and other agencies make available for traveler safety,” Jundt added. “Please encourage family and friends to bookmark the SDDOT web site and to sign up for customized SD511 notifications. This free service allows people to receive text messages or email notifications about road closure updates and travel advisories along routes of their choice.”

One plow from each of the state’s 12 DOT districts gets a name. Winners are voted on by DOT staff.

Names can be submitted through Nov. 30 at the DOT's website.

Winning plow names from previous years include "605 Polar Express," "Plowabunga" and "Little Plow on the Prairie."
