One person is dead and another is hurt after a plane crash northwest of Pierre.

According to the Hughes County Sheriffs office, the plane was carrying two people, a pilot and a passenger, when it went down Monday afternoon near the Missouri River.

Both were transported to a Pierre hospital. The passenger was pronounced dead. The pilot is in stable condition.

Those on board have not been identified, but authorities said they are not from South Dakota.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is set to arrive Tuesday to lead the investigation.
