The historic portion of Sylvan Lake Lodge is still standing after a weekend fire.
Firefighters contained the blaze to the hotel wing of the lodge, where 12 of 35 rooms are severely damaged. The hotel wing was added in 1991.
The original portion of the lodge was built in 1937. That part of the building is water-damaged but not burned.
The lodge is part of Custer State Park. Superintendent Matt Snyder says the Custer Volunteer Fire Department and other responding agencies stopped the fire from spreading.
“Those guys did an excellent job of getting on this really quick and it was very fortunate that, yeah, they were able to get up there as quick as they were and do what they were able to do to get this thing under control," Snyder said Monday.
Snyder said the building is insured and the state will rebuild the damaged portion. He said the lodge was already closed for the winter when the fire broke out.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
