GFP Department Launches Outreach To Pheasant Hunters

The pheasant is one of South Dakota’s most iconic species. The state is launched  new hunting initiatives to prepare for the fall pheasant season.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department wanted to attract new pheasant hunters to the state.

Nick Harrington, who is the communications manager, said the department will once again take advantage of the recent mild winters.

“We extended the season until January 31st. This year will be the second year, last year we say 27,000 birds harvested in January alone,” Harrington said.

“That’s an opportunity that folks wouldn’t have had before, and they’re going to have that opportunity again this year so as great as last year was, I really think this year should be even better.”

The department is trying to catch the attention of a broader audience.

Harrington said they are targeting female hunters and hunters from out of state. A partnership with the Minnesota Vikings is designed to bring in pheasant hunters from around the Midwest.

Land access can be difficult for hunters, especially since 80 percent of the state is privately owned.

Harrington said the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) partnered with landowners willing to allow pheasant hunters on their property.

“So, when you buy your license, you’re opening up these lands for you and that’s exactly how this works,” he said.

“We’ll come in, you know, lease with the landowner, and that will open their land up. No additional permission required, so if you see a walking area, you’re good to go hunt on it.”

Last season, hunters shot more than 1 million pheasants across the state. This year’s season begins on October 16th and ends January 31st.
