RCPD Moves Into Investigation Phase Following Shots Fired

The Rapid City Police Department is moving into an investigation phase of a report of shots fired around 9:15 on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on the 800 block of Fifth street, just south east of downtown. Officials confirm one shot was fired and involves two groups of juveniles.

A spokesperson with the Rapid City police says a large number of individuals have been detained as part of an investigation into a shots fired call.

The incident involves two groups of juveniles. One group was in a home along Fifth street.

Police confirm at least one shot was fired, which struck an apartment building on Columbus street, near the first home.

The Rapid City, Pennington County Special Response Team was called in to get individuals out of that building without incident.

Five people were detained from the Fifth street house, multiple individuals were detained as they exited the second residence.

Police Chief Karl Jageris says most of those detained are juveniles.

“Those investigations are handled confidentially,” Jageris says. “We will likely not be able to release names. I can tell you in general terms it is very concerning that here we are on what should be a Tuesday morning on the school day and we have a youth involved shooting right in our core area of Rapid City. We’ve been working very hard as a department to address gun violence and youth violence and we clearly have some work to do.”

A spokesperson with the department says they have a lot of interviews with suspects to figure out the specific circumstances surrounding the shots fired call. They says the gun in question is also part of the investigation.

The incident occurred caddy corner from Rapid City High School, which went on secured status. That was lifted at 12:30.
