Legion Lake Fire Fully Contained

Brian Gevik/SDPB

Officials with Custer State Park say the Legion Lake Fire is 100 percent contained.

?The fire burned more than 54,000 acres and was sparked last Monday by a downed power line.

Matt Snyder is the superintendent at Custer State Park. He says the park remains open on a limited basis. Snyder says there is not an exact date as to when the park will fully open.

He says the Sylvan Lake area is open, along with US Highway 16A and South Dakota Highway 87.  Snyder says park employees continue to make repairs.

"Before we can open up the park in its entirety, mainly the Wildlife Loop Road, the interior roads, and trails - staff need to go through and do some initial assessments of do we have any hazardous trees that need to be removed from the trails, from roadways, that's been the majority of that work,” Snyder says.

He says employees are replacing some guardrail that burned on Wildlife Loop Road. Snyder says workers are also fixing perimeter fencing. He says officials continue to assess the health of the park's burros and buffalo.

He says most of the buffalo are in the corrals and are doing well.  Snyder says the burros are holding their own and continue to receive medical care.?
