Where should we put the state's only law school? Declining applicants, smaller classes, and concerns about life after law school are just a few reasons the University of South Dakota is taking the relocation of the Law School into consideration. While the proposed move would land the school just an hour north of Vermillion in Sioux Falls, the question resulted in a five-hour task force panel that ended in plans for the next meeting. SDPB's Jackie Hendry covered the proceedings, and she's here with highlights.
Last night the 2017 Friend of the Big Sioux River was announced in a presentation at Monk's in downtown Sioux Falls. The award has been bestowed upon Jay Gilbertson. Since 1994, Gilbertson has been manager of the East Dakota Water Development District. An expert in water quality issues, Gilbertson has been a champion for programs to cut pollution. Friends of the Big Sioux River describe Gilbertson as a man who has always worked for the best use, conservation of, and the long term protection of the Big Sioux River and its aquifer.
The 77th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is underway and that means the Black Hills tourism season has moved into its final busy month of 2017. Tourism officials say the numbers are down from the two previous years. Those two summers featured significant anniversaries, the 75th for the Sturgis Rally and the Park Service celebrating its 100th year. SDPB's Lee Strubinger has this look at how tourism is changing in the Black Hills.
Artists celebrate summer and capitalize on opportunities to take canvas and brush out of doors to paint under the sunshine. The 9th Annual "Paint Out" is presented by the Harvey Dunn Society in DeSmet. It's scheduled for August 11 through the 13th. Artist Stephen Randall has been with the festival since its inception. He joins us now.
