In The Moment ... Admiral James Stavridis

Sea Power

In the Moment ... June 21, 2017 Show 119 Hour 1

A new book by Admiral James Stavridis seeks to understand the value and challenges of the sea. "Sea Power: The History and Geopolitics of the World's Oceans" looks at our relationship to nautical adventure, conflict, and trade. Admiral Stavridis is the first Naval officer chosen as Supreme Allied Commander for Global Operations at NATO. He officially took to sea in the summer of 1972, with a sextant, paper charts, and senior officers as his primary guides. If you add up his months on the ocean, he's lived afloat for nearly eleven years. He retired after more than 35 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy. He has written on global security issues for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic.

Summer has officially begun. Julie Hoffman of East River Nursery joins us to answer your questions about gardening and growing.

This summer, South Dakota Public Broadcasting helps you prepare for the latest documentary project from Ken Burns. It's called "The Vietnam War." We've been bringing you the stories of South Dakotans during the Vietnam Era. When SDPB traveled to Custer, we welcomed Vietnam veterans to tell a little of their stories. Today we bring you thoughts from Bernie Citta and James Musson.
