A power outage atDelta’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia is impacting flights worldwide. Delta flights from Sioux Falls heading to Minneapolis and Atlanta were delayed by several hours August 8th.

Dan Letellier is executive director of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. He says after the outage at 2.30 am eastern time, it took a few hours before the Delta system was back online.

“The other flights shortly after that time, 8 o’clock I understand they had a lot of the system back online, but whenever you have thousands of flights in your operation disruption for 2-3 hours or delays for 2-3 hours it takes a while to adjust to that and get up and running,” says Letellier.

Several passengers flying out of Sioux Falls are rebooking flights.

Alan Swanson is flying to Germany to visit family. His flight is cancelled, but he’s now booked on a later plane.

“I’m going to get to my destination, which is Hamburg, I’ll be there about eight hours later,” says Swanson.

Other Delta passengers are experiencing cancelled connecting flights. DonNita DeBerg is from Sibley, Iowa. She’s waiting for her flight to get rerouted.

“Right now I’m on my way to California and my flight from Minneapolis to Los Angles has been cancelled,” says DeBerg.

The airline has daily flights out of Sioux Falls and Rapid City.  Officials expect to catch up to the backlog of deleted and cancelled flights soon.
