Anthem, Inc Security Breach May Affect South Dakotans

As the result of an alleged cyber attack on Anthem, Inc., the personal information of South Dakotans may have been compromised.

Director of the South Dakota Division of Insurance Larry Deiter says Anthem doesn’t currently sell individual health insurance policies in South Dakota but residents who received health care through national employers may be affected by the security breach.

“There’s varying information as these criminals access different areas, but some of the information that could have been compromised, and my understanding is, depending on records, it might have been a piece or another of these, but the fullness would be, it could have included your name, your birthdate, an address, employer information, and some type of identification number – either a policy identification number or potentially also a social security number,” says Deiter.

Deiter says Anthem is contacting policy-holders that may have been affected. He adds that South Dakotans should never give out personal information over the phone or via email.
