Search To Resume In Butte County For Missing Woman

Authorities say the search for Kristen Lakin is resuming in Butte County in the Black Hills. 24-year old Lakin has been missing since mid June when the SUV she was traveling in was swept away in flash flood waters after a strong thunderstorm blew through the area. The search for Lakin was temporarily suspended after officials and volunteers repeatedly came up empty-handed.

Butte County Deputy Sheriff Tristan Clements says it is primarily limited to a ground search at this time.

“I know that we’re in the process of trying to make arrangements with cadaver dogs and primarily they’re going to concentrate on the large debris piles on the Battle Creek creek bottom and the Morrow River bottom. It’s dried out substantially since the flood event occurred and it’s dried out since the last time we were up there but some the debris piles are rather large, we’re talking like in between eight and ten foot tall and fifteen to twenty feet long,” says Clements.

Clements says they have not set a definitive date to resume the search. He says the Butte County sheriff’s office, local fire and ambulance personnel, and area ranchers are expected to take part. Clements says volunteers are also welcome to assist.

Lakin was wearing a black shirt and jeans at the time she went missing. 57-year old Roxanne Bleinbaum was traveling with Lakin when their SUV was swept away, but managed to make it out safely.
