Bill Extends DOT Speed Zone Authority

The House Transportation Committee passed a bill that allows the Transportation Commission to establish limited speed zones on non-state trunk highways. Bill Nevin is the legal counsel for the Department of Transportation. He says there are numerous highways under DOT jurisdiction that are not part of the state trunk highway system in statute. He says currently no one has the authority to set a limited speed in these areas. He says House Bill 1037 changes that.

“Passage of this bill would extend the Transportation Commission’s rule making authority to establish limited speed zones on any highway segment that is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation. We think this is an important safety issue,” Nevin says.

The bill passed with a vote of eleven to two and now goes to the House floor.
