Hunters and Recreators: Sharing Outdoor Spaces Safely

November is here and hunting season is in full swing. And with winter weather fast approaching that means more people will head outside to enjoy sports like snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Ben Lawhon is the Education Director for Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. He says it’s important to remember there is potential for hunters and outdoor recreationists to overlap. He says it’s a good idea to research any recreation destination ahead of time to find out what other activities are going on nearby.

“If you are concerned about hunting in an area, choose an area where hunting may not be allowed, or it’s not that particular season. Vice-versa if you are a hunter find those areas where you may not have as many people outside and that way all of us can enjoy the public spaces in a way that we want to and not only keep each other safe but ensure that everybody has a good experience in the outdoors,” says Lawhon.

Lawhon says hunters should double-check their target before they shoot. He says outdoor recreators can help keep themselves safe by wearing orange.
