Black Hills State University President Announces Retirement

Kay Schallenkamp, President of Black Hills State University in Spearfish, announced she is retiring. Schallenkemp has been President of Black Hills State since 2006.

Schallenkamp says she’s enjoyed her seven-year stay at the University but she’d like to spend more time with her family. She says although she’s looking forward to retirement - there are things she will miss about working at a University.

“The best part of being in higher education is that we are surrounded by bright, talented students who in many instances believe that they can solve all the world’s problems all by themselves. And to be surrounded with that energy, the talent, the promise of students truly is the best job in the world,” says Schallenkamp.

Schallenkamp’s career in higher education has spanned more than forty years. Prior to Black Hills State she spent nine years as President at Emporia State University in Kansas. Black Hills State University officials say they will be announcing a process and timeline for securing Schallenkamp’s successor soon.
