Red Cross Shelters In Colorado Housing More Than Four Hundred

A South Dakota Red Cross volunteer says the rains have subsided and the sun is out over parts of Northern Colorado.

Nancy McKenney with the Red Cross deployed from Pierre to Colorado last week to help people affected by the heavy rains and flooding. McKenney says there are currently about sixteen Red Cross shelters near the affected areas that are housing more than four-hundred people. She says there are also many residents that are still stranded – some can’t leave, and some won’t.

“We’re trying to get out there and find these people and get them shelter and food. There’s so many little pockets of people that you can’t find. You know they’re without food and they’re without water and without electricity and the object of everybody’s deal here is to find them and help them out,” says McKenney.

McKenney says the fact that the rain has stopped and the sun is out is boosting people’s morale. She says much hard work lies ahead though as more stranded people are located and brought back to area shelters. McKenney says people staying in the shelters need food, clothing, and other basic necessities. She adds that many opportunities exist for anyone interested in helping out.
