South Dakota Artists Explore Dark Matter

The Sanford Underground Lab in Lead typically brings scientists together to explain the elusive and mysterious microscopic neutrino. Into the Dark: Artists Exploring Dark Matter is an art exhibit showing the interpretation of dark matter by artists from across the state.

The miles of deep underground tunnels beneath the town of Lead are slowly transitioning from a gold- mining operation into a first-class science research lab. Scientists at the lab are hoping to get to know dark matter a little better. What does it look like? What does it feel like?

Director of the Historic Deadwood Lead Arts Council Karen Everett says artists from across the state are offering their take on dark matter.

“We have twenty-two artists from across the state. Since the lab is a statewide organization we wanted to make sure we included the entire state. So we have some East River and West River artists. And we have artists in all media from photography, to watercolor, to sculptures – and they have been working the past several months on their interpretation of dark matter,” says Everett.

Everett says there are no two pieces alike in the exhibit. She says the Deadwood/Lead Arts center is hosting an unveiling of the dark matter interpretation pieces Friday evening and the public is welcome to attend.  Everett adds that the exhibit is being held in correlation with Neutrino Day – an annual celebration in Lead of all things science.
