Black Hills Vacations For Vets

Veterans from across the country are being offered the opportunity to take a free South Dakota vacation through Operation Black Hills Cabin – which is gaining support from business and community members alike.

Pat Baird and her husband are retired military veterans and residents of Custer.

After seeing an injured South Dakota combat veteran on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Pat Baird says the couple decided it was time to give back.

“Custer and the Black Hills area is a very large veterans community,” explains Baird. “And everybody that we talked to thought that starting this project was a good idea.”

The idea involves offering an all-expenses paid one-week Black Hills vacation to a combat veteran who has been wounded in the Iraq or Afghanistan campaigns.

Eligible veterans must be 30 percent disabled and may be accompanied by their families. With meals, attractions and lodging funded by local businesses, travel costs to the Black Hills are the veteran’s only expense.
