Hyperion Project In Doubt

The future of the Hyperion oil refinery proposed for South Eastern South Dakota is now in question.

The company did not extend its option to buy or acquire land in Union County on the site of the proposed refinery.

Ed Cable is a spokesperson for three groups that organized against the proposal.  He says it appears the refinery won’t be built at this site in Union County.  While Cable says he’s pleased, he doesn’t call it a win, because he says the divisive issue tore apart the county.

“So much damage has already occurred to the community and to the relationship  between neighbors and even within churches and the cities in Union country so it’s not a good situation but it’s better than the alternative of the project proceeding,” says Cable.

Company officials have not commented on tape. But, in an e-mail a spokesperson says Hyperion is evaluating its options and opportunities and continuing to dialog with landowners.  Locals in favor of the economic development the project promised are say they are disappointed.

You can hear more on this topic on  Dakota Digest that airs on Wednesday October 3rd.

The State Supreme Court will also hear oral arguments on Wednesday morning over the air quality permit for the proposed refinery.

SDPB will provide an update on Dakota Midday at Noon Central, Eleven Mountain.
