Weather officials are issuing a blizzard warning for eastern South Dakota as a high impact winter storm is affecting travel today.
The National Weather Service reports conditions are deteriorating rapidly for most of the region. The service predicts gusts of up to 65 miles per hour, with wind chills dipping to the teens below zero later in the day.
Meteorologist Jeff Chapman says 3 to 6 inches of snow are expected to develop this afternoon. He says SDDOT has posted multiple no travel advisories.
"That's primarily because within the snow and strong wind area we're seeing many places with blizzard or near-blizzard conditions.”
Chapman says much of the snow that does not blow away will remain for a few days.
The snow will end by the late afternoon and early evening, but high winds and bitter cold will continue into Christmas Eve.
