Fresh Tracks: Thin Lizzy box set snags max rating

Sturgis native David Hersrud brings his years in the music industry and lifelong interest in discovering new music to this episode of Fresh Tracks.

The highest rated album or box set from 2022 was Revolver, a five-CD set from the Beatles. The release garnered a score of 100 from critics around the world and was the only album/box set to secure that rating last year.

Now we have another box set that has achieved the coveted 100 score. It's from the Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy.

The Boys Are Back in Town (Live)

The band was formed in 1969 in Dublin and started out playing Celtic rock. Phil Lynott, the group’s de facto leader, decided in 1974 that the band needed two lead guitar players.

Soon after the band toured the states in support of Bob Seger and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. In 1976 the band recorded their breakthrough album Jailbreak. In 1978 Thin Lizzy recorded the album Live and Dangerous. It was a huge success.

Over the next few years, the band endured many personnel changes. Alcohol, drugs and personality conflicts took their toll. By 1983, the band had called it quits. Phil Lynott died in early 1986 at the age of 36. Since then, various incarnations of the band have emerged, usually centered around one or more of the original band members.

The boxset Live and Dangerous is worthy of the accolades it has received, and the 100 score is well deserved.
