California-based vocalist Marilyn Scott has been making records for more than four decades. They all showcase her smooth, bluesy voice in a variety of jazz interpretations of the great standards, contemporary songs and originals. Throughout her career she's frequently collaborated with keyboardist Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip of the Yellowjackets and they're the guiding lights behind her most recent album, Standard Blue.

Scott makes her first South Dakota appearance on Friday when she opens the 20th Sioux Falls Jazz and Bluesseason at the Orpheum Theater. She'll feature songs from Standard Blue along with some blues and favorites from her earlier recordings. With her on stage are Ferrante and Haslip and other top West Coast musicians.

She joined Jazz Nightly and discussed her music, career and the challenges of being an artist in a changing music industry.
