Training South Dakota's 911 dispatchers

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

In moments of crisis, we often turn to a stranger on the other end of a phone line.

In South Dakota, it’s often a rural dispatcher.

In 2021, South Dakotans placed over 340,000 calls to 911, according to the National 911 Annual Report.

Amanda Johnson is the state 911 training coordinator and former rural dispatcher. She joins "In the Moment" for a conversation on educating the next generation of South Dakota dispatchers and finding the human element of crisis response.
