Avera Research Institute

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Maternal mortality rates, or the number of mothers who die within a year of childbirth, are rising in the U.S.

The Avera Research Institute is exploring the causes of that increase and how to address it. Their work just received a financial boost.

The Institute received a $58 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The funds will seek to improve the health of mothers and children, especially in underrepresented communities.

Amy Elliott, Ph.D., is the chief clinical research officer at the Avera Research Institute.
