New RSV vaccines available this fall

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the many respiratory illnesses circulating every fall. For most people, it causes a small case of the sniffles and some sneezes. For infants and older adults, it’s one of the main causes of hospitalization.

Last fall was a particularly brutal RSV season. This fall, there are more preventive tools available than ever before.

David Basel, M.D., is a pediatrician and internal medicine specialist at Avera Medical Group Harrisburg. He discusses the newly available vaccines and what South Dakota parents need to know.
