Avera Hospital names Dr. Ronald Place, MD, as their new regional president and CEO.

Avera said Place will provide leadership and oversee multiple areas of Avera’s network including McKennan Hospital, Avera Behavioral Health Hospital, and many more.

David Flicek was Avera's previous CEO. Flicek will now move to the position of Chief Operating Officer at Avera. He said he believes Place is the right person for the job.

"After a robust national search and incredibly strong candidate pool, the final selection of Dr. Place was made by a comprehensive group of administrative and physician leaders and our board of directors," said Flicek.

Place recently retired from the military with the rank of three-star general where he led a $53 billion dollar operation for the Department of Defense.

He also served as a chief surgeon, deputy commander, and commander at multiple U.S. Army medical centers.

"My time in the Army was an incredible opportunity to see what selfless leadership can look like. I believe in empowered mentorship to guide others to their greatest potential. Relationships are incredibly important; not only with our coworkers, families and friends, but with the communities we serve,” said Place.

Place is originally from Huron and started his educational journey at the University of South Dakota.

He will officially begin his role May 13.
