White House announces health and nutrition efforts across Indian Country

DOI

The Biden Administration will create "Indigenous food hubs" to help source Indigenous foods and improve nutrition education. The program will serve Bureau of Indian Education schools and Bureau of Indian Affairs detention centers.

U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement, “Food is an integral cornerstone of Indigenous communities – it represents our connection to the Earth and the customs that have been passed down through generations. Yet Indigenous communities face historically high rates of food insecurity and often lack access to affordable and healthy foods."

Nutritionists will develop and implement nutrition standards that draw from Indigenous cultures. The Biden administration says efforts will be made to develop Tribal food sovereignty programs to support the effort.
