The number of South Dakotans actively infected with COVID-19 is down slightly. It’s the first time the number has dropped since December.

But there are still about 36,000 people in the state who currently have the disease. And hospitalizations have spiked above 400 again. COVID patients are in nearly 40 percent of the adult ICU beds in the state.

Seven more people have died with the disease. The state’s pandemic death toll stands at 2,609.

Vaccination numbers are not changing significantly as the omicron variant of the coronavirus continues to spread. About 57 percent of eligible South Dakotans have received a full vaccine series.
