Western Dakota expanding its Practical Nursing Program amidst nursing shortage

Western Dakota Technical College is expanding its Practical Nursing Program to the town of Philip next fall.

The program will take over a former elementary school building that will operate as a satellite campus.

The South Dakota Board of Nursing approved the program to address a shortage of nurses. The site is pending approval by the Higher Learning Commission, which is anticipated in the near future. The Philip program will be capped at 16 students.

The college plans to hire one full-time nursing faculty member to teach in Philip, plus adjunct instructors as needed.

Western Dakota Technical College is based in Rapid City. It’s the only technical college serving western South Dakota.
