Slipping Through The Cracks Of American Healthcare

Lori Walsh

In The Moment ... June 5, 2018 Show 351 Hour 1

If you know someone with a serious mental illness, odds are you know someone who is slipping through the cracks when it comes to standard American health care and chronic disease.  A recent report in the New York Times indicates those with serious mental illness die 15-30 years younger than those without.

It's a startling statistic with complicated contributing factors.  South Dakota healthcare providers are facing the challenge with innovations in screening and treatment.

Joining In The Moment to explain are Dan Heineman, vice president and medical officer for Sanford Health Network, and psychologist Jeffrey Leichter of Sanford Behavioral Health.

Lori Walsh is the host and senior producer of In the Moment.
