SD Among Nation’s Leaders In COVID Vaccination Rate, Official Says

A state official said Wednesday that South Dakota has one of the best COVID-19 vaccination rates in the country so far.

Josh Clayton is the state epidemiologist. He said 8,398 people are vaccinated. That’s almost 1 percent of the state.

“That may not sound like much,” Clayton said, “but we are leading the nation, at the very top of that with North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia.”

The state has received 22,400 vaccine doses. About 11,000 more are expected soon.

The initial doses are from Pfizer. The state is also getting doses from Moderna.

Frontline healthcare workers are the first to get the vaccine. State officials expect to finish that group by next week. Then they’ll move on to residents of long-term care facilities.
