New regulations have been established by the USDA to combat the current spread of avian influenza, or bird flu, in livestock.
Namely, dairy cattle are required to test negative for the virus prior to interstate movement. Herd owners must also report animals testing positive, and labs must report positive tests to the USDA.
The outbreak started impacting cattle in Kansas and Texas before being confirmed in other states, including South Dakota.
Health officials say there is currently no threat to humans, and pasteurized dairy products carry no risk of transmission.
