This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Using plastics on agricultural land could expose South Dakotans' food and water to microplastics. Biodegradable plastics may change that.

So how can we produce environmentally friendly plastics? It could be as easy as deleting or inserting a few genes in microbes.

Tanvi Govil, Ph.D, is a research scientist at South Dakota Mines. She's working on genetically engineering microbes to produce bioplastics.

Dr. Govil will present a STEAM Café talk about her research at Hay Camp Brewing Company in Rapid City on Aug. 15.
