Thinning project proposed for Black Hills

Brent Duerre

The Black Hills National Forest proposed a timber harvest and thinning operation in the Triple R Vegetation Management project area about five miles west of Rapid City.

Some of the proposed treatments include liberation cuts to remove mature and over-mature trees, removing pine from hardwood stands and meadows, and commercial thinning with an emphasis on thinning from below and retaining larger diameter trees.

The project could use tethered logging.

Before deciding on whether to go forward with this proposal, the Black Hills National Forest will analyze potential effects on resources including water and wildlife and consult with federal, state and tribal entities, according to the organization.

They are accepting public comments. Commits can be emailed to comments-rocky-mountain-black-hills-mystic@usda.gov or mailed to Mystic Ranger District Office, Attn: Triple R Vegetative Management Project, 8221 S. Mount Rushmore Rd, Rapid City, SD 57702.
