Smoke from Canadian wildfires creating hazy skies above Sioux Falls on May 18, 2023.

Due to smoke from wildfires in Canada, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources issued an air quality alert for the state on Thursday.

The South Dakota Department of Health warned that the smoke may be harmful to public health. Elderly people, children and those with respiratory problems are at an increased risk. Everyone is advised to minimize outdoor activities, avoid excessive physical activity and keep windows and doors shut.

The smoke caused low visibility and increased fine particulate matter pollution. These levels can be tracked on the Environmental Protection Agency’s website.

More information on air quality index levels can be found on theDepartment of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ website.
